Resting metabolic rate
What your body actually burns at rest, measured by indirect calorimetry rather than estimated from a formula.

What it is
Resting metabolic rate is measured by indirect calorimetry: you lie still, breathing normally under a canopy, while oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production are recorded. Energy expenditure follows directly from those two figures.
Predictive equations were built on populations, not on you, and can be wrong by several hundred kilocalories a day. When intake is being set deliberately, that error matters more than any other variable in the plan.
The measurement also gives a respiratory exchange ratio, which indicates the balance of carbohydrate and fat being used at rest.
What happens
- 01Fasted arrival, early morning where possible
- 02Ten to fifteen minutes of quiet rest
- 03Canopy measurement while you lie still
- 04Figures reviewed and carried into your dietary consultation
Who it is for
- Anyone whose weight is not responding as expected to a considered diet
- People planning a deliberate change in body composition
- Athletes matching intake to training load
- Anyone who wants their dietary plan built on a measurement
What comes next
A measurement on its own is not a decision. Next comes interpretation.
